2016 NBA AWARDS

QUOTE OF THE YEAR

Craig Sager last months captured the attention of the NBA world and beyond. Being a renowned, excellent reporter, Craig’s uncanny attitude towards life, even when he was on the verge of embracing death, touched millions of people. The colorful, flamboyant suits – his trademark – were a mirror of his soul, characterized by loving life and having fun, the hallmark of a life well lived. I wrote this article about him. Fascinating person. Rest in Peace, Craig Sager. Our world needs more Craig Sagers.

PHOTO OF THE YEAR

Picking a photo of the year was difficult. 2016 had so many intriguing and fantastic storylines… Nevertheless, this picture captures the NBA Zeitgeist of 2016. LeBron James, the kid from Akron, finally celebrating with his family and his people from The Land. LBJ managed to finally exorcise the demons who had plagued him for years (firstly, not being able to win with Cleveland in a preliminary stage of his career and secondly, fleeing to Miami to get his rings, infuriating his faithful followers).

Finally, he won for the Land. LeBron could rejoice in the company of millions of Cleveland sports fans, eager to finally taste success. Deserved prize for one of the most unhappy fanbases in recent USA sports history.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

Kobe Bryant made last Lakers season his farewell tour season. A final journey into NBA Mount Olympus, with camera crews and plenty of reporters narrating every occurrence. A few days before his last All-Star Game, I released this video. It captures the trajectory of one of the most prolific and hard working basketball players the world has known.

Obsessive, stubborn, crazy, beyond competitive, selfish, bad teammate, mamba… Kobe Bryant career had plenty of designations, as well as highs and lows. There was only one constant: his relentless pursuit of perfection, accumulating milestones, breaking records, aiming to touch MJ sacred ground, aka “6 Rings City”. He fell short on this one, but his 5 Titles out of 7 NBA Finals (plus a ton of records) are a testament to his excellence. Top 10 Player of All Time.

BOOK OF THE YEAR

Roland Lazenby is one of the best NBA writers. In his latest book, he tells us the story of Kobe Bean Bryant as only he can. Carefully crafted, – as the subject of his book – “Showboat: The Life of Kobe Bryant” takes us on a voyage into Kobe Bryant’s world, with all the details and profoundness required to make this book an instant collector’s item. This is a definitive must read for any NBA fan and a Bible for Kobe Bryant fans.

SONG OF THE YEAR

Ok, this song wasn’t made this year. Still, is there a better song to describe Kyrie Irving glorious return than the NBA 2k anthem “Cyhi da Prince – Sideways (2k Remix)”? If LeBron James is the King, Kyrie is Cleveland’s Cavaliers Prince, a silent killer masked with a cool persona, uncle drawing attention to his antics in cool videos and advertising. Could LBJ (even with “the block” – a strong candidate for photo of the year) win without Kyrie’s last shot? NBA Scholar doesn’t think so. Kryptonite Kyrie is the real deal, Curry’s Warriors Kryptonite, slayer of golden dreams. He returned better than ever, ready to win the NBA Finals, this time. No more injuries. Just play ball. Swish.

Game over.

Like a fan put it: “There are many sites about the NBA out there but there’s nothing quite like the NBA Scholar – it’s the total package for the NBA fan, hours and hours of fun!”
